Walmart tweaks its own brand ketchup to the Canadian palate

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Walmart Canada's Great Value Ketchup brand is giving Canadians more of what they want, the retailer announced Thursday, using locally grown tomatoes in the creation of a selection of sauce recipes.

"Last year Canadians voiced their opinion about the importance of buying ketchup made with our own tomatoes," stated Paul Goldsmith, senior director of brand management, private brands at Walmart Canada. "We couldn't agree more and want to take that sentiment even further. Starting with our Great Value Ketchup as a base, we've come up with a few suggestions to get more Canada into your ketchup."

A perfect accompaniment to a classic Quebecois tourtière, the Quatre-épices Ketchup mixes the sauce with nutmeg, ground cloves, ginger and black pepper together with a touch of maple syrup. Canadians can also start their day with a combination of celery salt, clam juice and Worcestershire and hot sauces for a Bloody Caesar Ketchup that is perfect over scrambled eggs or a gourmet mac and cheese, Walmart Canada stated.

The new Great Value Ketchup was introduced in May and will be available in all Walmart Supercenters by July. Ontario is home to the tomatoes and production of the new sauce, which is made without high-fructose corn syrup and is free of artificial colors, artificial flavors and preservatives.

Great Value has also created two international recipes for ketchups aimed at more global palates. These include a lime-seasoned Creamy Argentinian Dip for grilled seafood and Chinese Char-siu BBQ Sauce that is flavoured with sesame oil, chili garlic sauce and Chinese five-spice to be served with dumpling, spring rolls or even chicken wings.
